                    What We Believe

                    Jesus Christ and Mission
The mission of St. Paul's Cathedral is to nurture, love, teach and grow a loving community in Jesus Christ and to make Him known to others. In July, 2006, the Chapter of the Cathedral passed a resolution which states: we do hereby declare our unchanging commitment to Jesus Christ as the Son of God, the only name by which any person may be saved; and we further acknowledge the solemn responsibility placed upon us when we hear His words, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life." (John 14:6) We are here to Praise and to glorify God's Son Jesus and to celebrate His saving grace as he transforms our lives so that we may serve the world in his Name.

                    The Anglican Communion
St. Paul's is the cathedral parish of the Diocese of Quincy which is a constituent member of the worldwide Anglican Communion in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Episcopal Church is the expression of the Anglican Communion in the United States. The cathedral parish and the diocese accept the Holy Scriptures as authoritative in faith and morals and understand the Apostles' Creed and Nicene Creed to be the defining statements of our faith.

The Cathedral Church of St. Paul
The Cathedral Church of St. Paul has served the community of Peoria since 1848 when the parish was formed under the Episcopal leadership of Bishop Philander Chase. Originally located in the downtown area of Peoria, St. Paul's moved to its present location in 1959. The church was consecrated in 1963 and in the same year was named the Cathedral Parish of the Diocese of Quincy by Bishop Lickfield. This is the seat of the Bishop of Quincy. The Rt. Rev. John Clark Buchanan is the Provisional Bishop.

                    Worship
The principal service of worship at the cathedral is the Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion) which is celebrated at 8:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. each Sunday. During the summer months an outdoor service is offered in the courtyard of the Cathedral at 9:15 a.m. on Sundays. The Holy Communion is celebrated on Wednesdays in the Lady Chapel at the south end of the church. The service takes place at 12:00 Noon.

On Sundays the 8:00 a.m. service is Rite I (traditional) and at 10:30 a.m. the service is Rite II (contemporary) with music. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Holy Communion at St. Paul's Cathedral.

The Cathedral Choir is under the capable and outstanding direction of Dr. Douglas McQueen, Canon for Music. The choir sings during the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sundays and on special occasions. Persons interested in singing in the choir should see Canon McQueen.

                    Word and Sacrament
Our worship and spiritual life are based upon the Word of God written in the Scriptures and the Sacraments of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which God adopts us as His children and makes us members of Christ's Body, the Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God.

Confirmation is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop.

Holy Matrimony is Christian marriage in which a woman and a man enter into a life-long union, make their vows before God and the church, and receive the grace and blessing of God to help them fulfill their vows.

Holy Unction is the rite of anointing the sick with oil by which God's grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind, and body.

Reconciliation is the rite in which those who repent of their sins may confess them to God in the presence of a priest, and receive the assurance of pardon and the grace of absolution.

Ordination is the rite by which God gives authority and the grace of the Holy Spirit to those being made bishops, priests, and deacons; through prayer and the laying on of hands by bishops.

The Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion, or the Lord's Supper) is the sacrament commanded by Christ for the continual remembrance of his life, death, and resurrection, until his coming again. We celebrate Mass daily at the Cathedral.

How can I become a member of St. Paul's Cathedral?
Please speak with Dean Dedmon. Normally a person from a church in the apostolic succession (Roman Catholic and Orthodox) will be received into the Anglican Communion by the bishop. A person from a protestant tradition may be confirmed by the bishop. Persons from other Anglican churches may be transferred to the parish. Baptisms may be scheduled at any time.
